Compost Socks for City of Forest Day - Manhattan

  • Compost Compound in Riverside Park Conservancy (Near 96th Street Clay Tennis Courts) Hudson River Greenway New York, NY 10025 United States (map)

Join us on Saturday, October 14th to help us take care of Riverside Park’s urban forest canopy from the ground up! The NYC Compost Project Hosted by the Lower East Side Ecology Center and Riverside Park Conservancy are honoring the second annual City of Forest Day with a project at the Park’s new compost facility and the adjacent landscape.

We will be creating compost socks – a holistic erosion control method – to be placed on sloped areas in Riverside Park. We will also be laying compost down on the adjacent landscape, which was planted in the spring of 2023 after being cleared of a thick layer of invasive plants and vines. The site is ADA-accessible, a parking lot and restrooms are available nearby. Detailed walking and driving directions will be shared to registrants.

The event will include a brief discussion of recent developments in New York City policy around the urban forest canopy as well as a tour of Riverside Park’s composting operations.

What is City of Forest Day? Presented by Forest for All NYC in partnership with the Parks and Open Space Partners – NYC Coalition and NYC Parks, City of Forest Day is an annual day of activities across the city to raise awareness of the importance of the New York City urban forest, and the essential role New Yorkers play every day in caring for the “lungs” of our city.

Event led by NYC Compost Project hosted by the LES Ecology Center.
